Background of the Study :
Access to quality instructional materials is a critical determinant of academic success in STEM subjects. In Argungu LGA, Kebbi State, the availability of up-to-date and relevant STEM textbooks has become a focal point for improving educational outcomes. Textbooks not only serve as a primary source of knowledge but also provide structured content that supports curriculum objectives. However, disparities in the availability and quality of these textbooks can lead to significant variations in student performance. Recent studies have highlighted that inadequate instructional materials are a persistent challenge in many under-resourced regions (Lawal, 2023). In Argungu LGA, limited distribution channels, budget constraints, and logistical issues contribute to the scarcity of quality STEM textbooks. The importance of having a comprehensive library of textbooks is underscored by the fact that well-designed materials can foster a deeper understanding of complex STEM concepts and enhance self-directed learning (Ahmed, 2024). Moreover, textbooks that are aligned with contemporary scientific discoveries and technological advancements are essential for preparing students for modern challenges. As education systems globally strive to integrate innovative teaching methods, the role of traditional textbooks must also be re-evaluated to ensure they complement digital and experiential learning modalities (Jibril, 2025). In this context, evaluating the availability of STEM textbooks in Argungu LGA is crucial for identifying gaps in educational resource allocation. This study will explore the extent to which limited textbook availability affects student engagement, comprehension, and overall academic performance. By critically analyzing the current status of textbook provision, the research aims to highlight the need for policy interventions that promote equitable access to quality instructional materials. The investigation will also consider how the integration of digital platforms can supplement textbook learning, offering a hybrid approach that could mitigate resource challenges. Ultimately, the study seeks to provide recommendations that ensure all students in Argungu LGA have access to the materials necessary for excelling in STEM subjects, thereby contributing to the overall improvement of educational standards in the region.
Statement of the Problem :
In Argungu LGA, Kebbi State, the dearth of adequate STEM textbooks poses a significant barrier to effective teaching and learning. The scarcity of updated and relevant textbooks has resulted in a heavy reliance on outdated materials that do not reflect current scientific paradigms. This limitation negatively impacts students’ ability to grasp complex STEM concepts, leading to diminished academic performance and reduced enthusiasm for science-related subjects. Moreover, the inconsistent distribution of textbooks exacerbates educational inequalities, as some schools receive sufficient resources while others remain underserved (Suleiman, 2024). Inadequate textbook availability further places strain on teachers, who are forced to improvise lesson plans without the support of standardized materials. Additionally, the absence of locally contextualized content in available textbooks fails to address the unique learning needs of students in Argungu LGA, thereby widening the achievement gap. These challenges are compounded by budgetary constraints and logistical inefficiencies within the educational supply chain. There is a pressing need to investigate the root causes of textbook scarcity and assess its impact on STEM learning outcomes. By identifying the systemic issues that contribute to resource limitations, this study will offer insights into how educational authorities can optimize textbook distribution and integrate complementary digital resources. The findings are expected to support the development of targeted interventions that enhance both the quality and quantity of instructional materials, ultimately fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence in STEM disciplines (Gambo, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the current availability of STEM textbooks in Argungu LGA.
To assess the impact of textbook scarcity on student learning outcomes in STEM subjects.
To recommend strategies for improving the distribution and quality of STEM textbooks.
Research Questions:
What is the current state of STEM textbook availability in Argungu LGA?
How does the lack of adequate textbooks affect student performance in STEM subjects?
What measures can be taken to improve textbook access and quality in the region?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Limited availability of STEM textbooks adversely affects student academic performance.
H2: Schools with better access to updated textbooks show higher student achievement in STEM subjects.
H3: Integrating digital resources with traditional textbooks can mitigate the challenges of resource scarcity.
Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it highlights the critical role of quality instructional materials in enhancing STEM education. The findings will inform policymakers and educational administrators in Argungu LGA about the urgent need for improved textbook distribution and supplementary digital solutions. Enhanced access to current textbooks is expected to boost student engagement and academic performance, thereby laying the groundwork for a more robust STEM educational framework (Abdullahi, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
STEM Textbooks: Educational materials covering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics subjects.
Availability: The degree to which textbooks are accessible to students and teachers.
